CLC's fall international film series kicks off Sept. 8

Four highly acclaimed international films will be presented for free at 7 p.m. Fridays by the College of Lake County Center for International Education. The Fall Semester films are: "Under the Shadow" Sept. 8, "Blow-Up" Oct. 6, "Right Now, Wrong Then" Nov. 3 and "Elle" Dec. 1.

The films will be shown at the Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St. in Room D100 (choir rehearsal room) until A011 (A Wing Auditorium) has completed repairs from the July flood. Films have subtitles when necessary, include adult content and are not suitable for children.

• Sept. 8: "Under the Shadow" (Qatar, Jordan and United Kingdom, 2016). A mother and daughter find themselves under siege in their apartment from two sources at once: Saddam Hussein, bombing Tehran during the Iran-Iraq war, and a malevolent "djinn," with a worrying fixation on the girl's beloved doll. "Under the Shadow" is riveting, both for its exploration of Iranian social codes and its deployment of those codes to shake up horror movie conventions.

• Oct. 6: "Blow-Up" (England/Italy, 1966). In swinging 1960s London, a fashion photographer may have captured a murder plot in his casual snapshots of a public park and must decide whether or not to get involved. Celebrate the 50th anniversary of Michelangelo Antonioni's art-house classic with its groovy clothes, Herbie Hancock music and mimes. Winner of the Cannes Grand Prix and nominated for two Academy Awards.

• Nov. 3: "Right Now, Wrong Then" (South Korea, 2015). Visiting a small town to introduce a film screening, a celebrated director meets a young painter who is also a fan of his work. They strike up a gentle romance over the course of the day, and then the events of their courtship are presented again, with subtle (and not-so-subtle) differences. Admired at festivals for years, Hong Sang-Soo's work has not been widely seen in the U.S.

• Dec. 1: "Elle" (France/Germany 2016). Legendary provocateur Paul Verhoeven ("RoboCop," "Basic Instinct") directed Isabelle Huppert to an Oscar-nominated performance in a film about a video game designer brutally attacked in her home, who refuses to report the incident to the police, perhaps for dark reasons.
