11th Annual Jewish Film Series Begins At the Jewish Cultural Center

Five Jewish-themed award-winning films produced in Israel and Argentina and will be shown on five consecutive Wednesday evenings at 7:15 p.m. beginning May 2 at the Jewish Cultural Center, 5461 North Terrace Road.

A special screening of the award winning film Maktub will be Sunday, May 6 at 3 p.m.

These films are suitable for those 16 and older.  These films have garnered international film awards and nominations, and have received recognition at film festivals throughout the United States, Europe and Israel.

Individual tickets are $8 per person and include complimentary popcorn and a soft drink.

May 2, 7:15 p.m. -  In Between, Israel, subtitles, 103 minutes:  Three Palestinian women living in an apartment in Tel Aviv try to find a balance between traditional and modern culture.  Fourteen awards were received from the Israel Film Academy, The Istanbul International Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, among others.  Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpUVQMDoewU.

Special screening Sunday, May 6, 3 p.m. - Maktub, Israel, subtitles, 100 minutes: Two criminals are the sole survivors of a terrorist attack in Jerusalem. They decide to change their ways and become living angels.  Awards were received from the Monte Carlo International Film Festival and Best of Festival from the Palm Springs International Festival, among others. Wednesday, May 9, 7:15 p.m. - The Last Suit, Argentina, subtitles, 86 minutes:  Abraham Bursztein, an 88-year-old Jewish tailor, runs away from home in Buenos Aires to Poland in search of a lost friend. Won the Audience Award at the Miami and Atlanta Jewish Film Festivals.

Wednesday, May 16, 7:15 p.m. - A Quiet Hear, Israel, subtitles, 92 minutes: Naomi, a secular young woman, seeks refuge from the pressure of her life as a concert pianist.  Won awards at the Haifa International Film Festival and the Talinn (Estonia) Black Nights Film Festival, among others.

Wednesday, May 23, 7:15 p.m. - Shelter, Israel, subtitles, 93 minutes:  In this thriller a Mossad agent is called back from sick leave and assigned the job babysitting a Lebanese informant. Wednesday, May 30, 7:15 p.m. - Encore screening of Maktub

"An average of 30 films are reviewed by a committee of volunteers each year in order to choose six feature films, five for the series and one for the sponsor event. Films screened at major national and international film festivals, those recommended by peers throughout the United States and those brought to the committee’s attention by filmmakers are included in the selection process.  Past selections have included Academy Award nominees and winners, as well as Israeli Ophir Award winners. Over the past eleven years, we have included films from thirteen different countries," officials said.
