Actress Saoirse Ronan has revealed she was hiking through Glendalough when she discovered she had been nominated for a Golden Globe.

Saoirse Ronan has earned a Best Performance by an Actress (Musical or Comedy) Golden Globe nomination for her role in Lady Bird.

It's the latest in a slew of nominations for the 23-year-old Carlow actress ahead of awards season and her performance in the coming-of-age story is expected to also earn her a third Oscar nomination.

“I actually forgot about it because I was just on a different time zone and I was up and out of the house,” she told PEOPLE magazine.

“I had a friend over and we went to this beautiful site called Glendalough, which is a monastic site and there’s a beautiful lake and mountains.

“My bag just started to vibrate nonstop and I was like ‘What’s going on?’ And then I saw a bunch of missed calls from my publicist and I was like, ‘Oh s—, they’re out today!’”

“It was actually quite nice cause it meant I wasn’t thinking about it too much. It was such a lovely, pleasant surprise when I heard”.

The actress told the magazine she intends to take her mother to the awards as her plus one.

The nominees for the 75th Golden Globe Awards were announced at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California and are usually a good prediction of how the Academy Awards will unfold.

The nominations were revealed by Alfre Woodard (Marvel’s Luke Cage, Lemony Snickets: A Series of Unfortunate Events), Garrett Hedlund (Mudbound), Kristen Bell (The Good Place) and Sharon Stone (most recently The Disaster Artist).

Martin McDonagh also earned a nomination for Best Director for his latest film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
