Brazil did not rain goals in the football World Cup finals. But the country did unleash a deluge of tweets during the month-long tournament between June 14 and July 15.

A blog post by Twitter said that though football fans around the globe came to the social platform to talk about the event, fans from Brazil tweeted than any other country. However, it did not give the number of tweets sent during the period.

France, which won the World Cup, was fifth in ranking of the countries that tweeted most about the tournament. Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States were in the second, third, and fourth positions, respectively.

The blog post said that whether the crowd was reacting to a big goal, predicting the outcome of the next match, or discussing the latest injury or an officiating controversy, fans came to Twitter to discuss all things related to the #WorldCup.

In fact, Brazil (@CBF_Futebol) was also the ‘most tweeted about team’ of the tournament. It was followed by France (@equipedefrance), Argentina (@Argentina), England (@England), and Portugal (@selecaoportugal).

Two Brazilian stars Neymar Jr and Philippe Coutinho were in the first and the fifth position among the top five ‘most mentioned players’ of the tournament. Lionel Messi of Argentina (second), Cristiano Ronaldo (third), and Kylian Mbappe (fourth) made up the Top 5.

A majority of fans tweeted to record memorable moments during the live match period. They tweeted the most during the final match between France and Croatia on July 15.

Two of the big peaks of twitter conversations, which are measured in tweets per minute (TPM), also happened during the final match. Though the Twitter blog post did not give any numbers, it said the highest TPM during the entire tournament was registered when Mbappe scored France’s fourth goal against Croatia on July 15.
