Due to Government announcements on Covid-19, MRW's 2020 National Recycling Awards (NRAs) and conference will now be run as two separate free-to-attend virtual events, giving more people the opportunity to attend.

The date of the virtual NRA conference remains on 15 December 2020, starting at 2pm. Confirmed speakers include Chris Preston, deputy director of resources and waste at Defra, and Nicola Lawton, national enforcement service deputy director at the Environment Agency (EA).

Two panel discussions will consider why our waste ends up where it should not and how we can change behaviours. Panellists include representatives from the EA, Environmental Services Association, Recycling Association, Hubbub, LWARB, University of Exeter and WRAP UK.

The National Recycling Awards ceremony has moved to 27 January 2021, to give them a separate platform to the conference.

The event will run from 4pm, with the winners being announced, as well as a special Editor’s Award that recognises the industry’s sterling efforts during the pandemic.

The new date will ensure that the organisers can put together a virtual event that captures as much as possible the spirit of the long-running and popular physical awards ceremony, often referred to as the Oscars of the recycling world.

This year, comedian Tom Allen will be hosting the awards, bringing some much-needed humour to attendees via their screens.

MRW editor Corin Williams said: "The NRAs is one of the most popular events in the industry's calendar, and we have again received an amazing range of high-quality entries.

"This year has been a challenge to us all, and it is heartening to see the creativity and hard work in the entries we have received. We have some very worthy winners indeed.

"Our conference has an exciting programme of speakers and subjects. I look forward to seeing participants and nominees during these online sessions.

"I also look forward to meeting everyone in the flesh for the 2021 NRAs, which will be held back in its spiritual home, the Park Lane Hilton in London."

More details on how to register for each event will be released in the coming weeks. In the meantime, to register your interest please email Laura.Glenister@emap.com.
