Madeline was first released in 1998, telling the story of a mischievous schoolgirl who desperately tries to prevent her boarding school from being closed down.

Based on the books by Ludwig Bemelmans, an Austrian-American author, Madeline is still a firm favourite of many.

But 23 years on, where is the cast of the film?

Several cast members have sadly died since it was released.

Others have gone on to win Tony Awards and even Oscars, with one actress making history with her incredible wins.

Hatty Jones - Madeline

Hatty landed the role of Madeline when she was just ten years old.

And after the film was released, Hatty, now 33, continued to pursue acting - but she narrowly missed out on a role she desperately wanted.

Hatty auditioned to play Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series, a role that launched Emma Watson to international stardom.

Instead, Hatty decided to return to school and complete her studies at Mountview drama school.

Since then, she has become a regular soap star with roles in Doctors and Holby City, and played the role of Suzie in comedy movie Wannabes in 2014.

Hatty has also branched out from acting and co-founded Heavy Wait, a creative platform that releases female-driven and topical stories.

She is also one of the brains behind award-winning TV short The Silent Gangsters, which scooped Best Score in a Short at the Southampton International Film Festival 2015 and was selected for the London Short Film Festival 2016.

Hatty has now written and starred in a semi-autobiographical play called That Girl, which explores the life of a child actress and what she goes on to do in her life including her friendships and online dating escapades.

In 2018, Hatty revealed in an interview that she initially fell out of love with acting after Madeline.

"Despite loving the experience, at that age I wasn’t keen to continue working. I did go for some auditions, but never really wanted any of the jobs," she told Forbes.

"I wanted to be in London to hang out with my friends. I remember a few times after Madeline that I missed out on birthday parties, or sleepovers in London because I was away or being interviewed.

"I also stopped enjoying auditions, they never seemed as fun as the Madeline auditions. "

Nigel Hawthorne - Lord "Cucuface" Covington

Nigel was best known for his stage acting and his portrayal of Sir Humphrey Appleby, the permanent secretary in the 1980s sitcom Yes Minister and the Cabinet Secretary in its sequel, Yes, Prime Minister.

For this role, he won four BAFTAs for Best Light Entertainment Performance.

He won the BAFTA for Best Actor in a Leading Role and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for portraying King George III in The Madness of King George.

He later won the BAFTA for Best Actor for series The Fragile Heart. He was also an Olivier Award and Tony Award winner for his theatre work.

Nigel was also a voice actor, starring in two Disney films - Fflewddur Fflam in The Black Cauldron and Professor Porter in Tarzan. He also voiced Captain Campion in the animated film adaptation of Watership Down.

He was award a CBE in the 1987 New Years Honours List, and was knighted in the 1999 New Years Honours List.

Nigel was gay, and was outed against his will in 1995 during the lead up to the Academy Awards.

But he attend the ceremony with his long-time partner Trevor Bentham, speaking openly about being gay in interviews and his autobiography, Straight Face, which was published posthumously.

Nigel died from a heart attack in 2001, having also battled pancreatic cancer, for which he had undergone several operations.

His partner Trevor was one of the pallbearers at his funeral.

French actress Stéphane would continue her illustrious film career in her native France following Madeline's release.

She starred in titles including La Bicyclette bleue, Sissi, l'impératrice rebelle, and La Battante.

Stéphane had a long creative collaboration with auteur Claude Chabrol, with whom she made 25 films.

Her most famous films include Chabrol’s 1970 film Le Boucher, Bunuel’s The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie , and Gabriel Axel’s 1987 art house hit Babette’s Feast, in which she had the starring role of Babette Hersant.

In 2018, Stéphane's son, actor Thomas Chabrol, told the press his mother had died following a long illness.

She said she had been in hospital for ten days and had returned home, where she died that night.

Arturo Venegas - Mr. Spanish Ambassador

Arturo briefly starred opposite Julia Roberts in famed romcom Notting Hill , which was written by Richard Curtis.

He would go on to pop up in two more of Curtis' films - Love Actually and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.

Arturo also continued to make occasional television appearances, including his guest role on Benidorm in 2009 where he played Dr Perez.

After her role in Madeline, Frances continued to act and became one of the most acclaimed actresses of her generation with starring roles in films including

She has won a Tony Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and three Academy Awards for her acting, in addition to a fourth Academy Award as producer, making her one of the few performers to achieve what's known as the Triple Crown of Acting.

Her worldwide box office gross exceeds £1.6billion, helped by her appearances in Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted.

For her portrayal of Marge Gunderson in Fargo, Frances won her first Academy Award for Best Actress.

Her other film roles include Mississippi Burning, Almost Famous, and North Country, all of which earned her nominations for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

In 2017, she starred as a hardened woman seeking justice for her daughter's murder in the crime-drama film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which won her a second Academy Award for Best Actress.

During this awards season, Frances drew significant media attention for her feminist acceptance speeches which poignantly coincided with the Time's Up and Me Too movements, which spoke out against abuse in the film industry.

In 2020, she starred in the acclaimed independent drama film Nomadland, earning a third Academy Award for Best Actress and, as one of the film's producers, the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Her wins for Nomadland made her the first person in history to win Academy Awards both as producer and performer for the same film, the second woman in history to win Best Actress three times, and the seventh performer overall to win three competitive acting Academy Awards.

Clare Thomas - Agatha 'Aggie'

Aggie was one of Madeline's best pals in the hit film. After this role, Clare went on to star in several British films and TV series.

She played Ingrid Dracula, daughter of the Count, in the children's television series Young Dracula.

She also made an appearance in BBC One's Holby City, as the stepdaughter of a male patient.

Clare married her boyfriend Tom Prosser in 2017, and in 2020 she started a vlogging channel on YouTube where she creates videos about her daily life.

Ben Daniels - Leopold the tutor

Following his role as Leopold, Ben went on to have an illustrious and successful stage career.

He won the 2001 Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the Arthur Miller play All My Sons.

In 2008, he made his Broadway début in a revival of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, for which he was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play.

Ben has also appeared on popular television series including Cutting It,The Virgin Queen, Law & Order: UK, The Paradise , House of Cards, and The Exorcist.

In 2018, he appeared in the NBC live televised concert rendition of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar as Pontius Pilate.

He also played Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon in the third season of Netflix series The Crown.

He is currently playing Walter Sampson in the Netflix superhero series, Jupiter's Legacy.
