Coming to Netflix in September 2018
SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) From "Groundhog Day" to "King Kong" and "Scarface" to "Call the Midwife," Netflix offers a wonderfully diverse list of titles coming to the streaming platform in September. Here are seven more titles that caught my eye.
Nacho Libre
Following the success of "Napoleon Dynamite,"Jared and Jerusha Hess made"Nacho Libre" with Jack Black. The film tells the story of a monk who moonlights as a masked-Mexican wrestler. While "Napoleon Dynamite" has its charms and a cult following, I prefer "Nacho Libre."
The Breakfast Club
I grew up watching John Hughes films on VHS. "Pretty in Pink" will always be my personal favorite, but "The Breakfast Club" is generally regarded as Hughes' high mark. The film finds five high school students from different backgrounds and social circles serving Saturday detention together. The cast includes Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Anthony Michael Hall and the fabulous Molly Ringwald.
Unforgiven
Some films are able to transcend their genre. "Unforgiven" is one of those movies. I had little interest in Westerns when the film was released in 1992, but the movie's four-Oscar run at the Academy Awards in 1993 made it inevitable that I would need to challenge my preconceived notions about the genre. When I finally relented and saw the film, "Unforgiven" opened my eyes to a section of cinematic history that has proven to be more rich and rewarding than I could have ever imagined. The narrative finds Clint Eastwood starring as a retired gunman who agrees to do one last job. Gene Hackman stars as the gunman's partner and won an Oscar for his supporting performance. Eastwood took home trophies for Best Picture and Best Director.
Marvel Studios' Black Panther
The Academy Award's creation of the Popular Feature category has been taken by some to be an indication that "Black Panther" won't be considered for Best Picture. We won't know until January 2019 if "Black Panther" is nominated in any categories. Even if it doesn't make its way into the "prestige categories," "Black Panther" is a much needed diversion from the superhero status quo as it shifts the focus from American and European narratives to delve into African and African-American culture. Diversity themes aside, it's a wildly enjoyable movie with great performances from Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira and Letitia Wright. (Available 9/4/18)
Marvel's Iron Fist: Season 2-- NETFLIX ORIGINAL
Outside of "Daredevil," "Jessica Jones" and half of the first season of "Luke Cage," the Marvel's Netflix output has been incredibly underwhelming. I struggled to make it through the first season of "Iron Fist," "The Defenders" was hardly the event it was built up to be and I have yet to make it all the way through the second season of "Luke Cage." So why does "Iron Fist" make this list? Because it needs to be good or I might give up on the Netflix series entirely. (Available 9/7/18)
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
"Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" is the best film you've never seen. Unless, of course, you've seen it. Its also the best film about video game culture (even though its actually based on a graphic novel). It's an all-American story about a guy (Michael Cera) in a going-nowhere band who has to fight his new girlfriend's seven evil exes. Just go with it. If you weren't in love with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, you will be. (Available 9/16/18)
The Witch
Released in 2015, "The Witch" is one of the most distinct horror films ever made. Set in 1630, "The Witch" finds a family living on the edge of the wilds. Exiled from their religious community, the family struggles to eek out an existence. And then one of their children disappears and the folklore of witchcraft and black magic slowly comes to life. Anya Taylor-Joy gives the sort of debut performance that instantly made her a star. (Available 9/17/18)
